Fiestas de Menorca

Since the 14th century, every town in Menorca has celebrated its patronal festival with the same ritual: white-clad horsemen, medieval ceremonies, and streets that fill with music, horses, and colour. Two are unmissable — and one is right on your doorstep.

🐎 Sant Joan · Ciutadella

Undoubtedly the island's most famous festival, dating back to the 14th century. The old town of Ciutadella fills with Menorquin horses ridden by the caixers — horsemen who weave through the crowds in the jaleos and caragols (spiral processions through the town's streets). The homo des be parades a ceremonial lamb through the city in a hundred visits. A genuinely medieval spectacle — arrive early and stay for the night celebrations.

🐎 Sant Bartomeu · Ferreries — 10 min from Villa Miel

Ferreries is the nearest town to Cala Galdana, and its patronal festival is the one guests at Villa Miel can most easily attend. Like all Menorcan fiestas, Sant Bartomeu centres on the jaleos: Menorquin stallions rear up (bot) in front of the crowd while the streets fill with people, music, and colour. The programme includes the capgrossos (giant papier-mâché figures parade), solemn vespers, and live concerts. Origins trace back to the founding of the Ferreries parish in the early 14th century.

If you prefer days that are not quite as hot and beaches that are not as crowded, April, May, and October are a great choice — the island is lush and peaceful, the weather still very pleasant, and the coves wonderfully quiet.
